Arts Program
Thurgood Marshall Academy Lower Schools Arts program is provided during day instruction and during the after-school program. Students are exposed to dance through Cultural Movement. They learn songs and instruments through Music Instruction. They gain an appreciation of music as they listen to artists from partnering musical orchestras. They learn art
Cultural Movements teaches students to honor and celebrate African, Caribbean, and Latinx cultures as they learn the history and significance of each movement. Through Cultural Movement students gain an appreciation of the music and the rhythms they experience with each sound, beat, and count. They learn the graceful movement of ballet, the coordination of African and Latinx movements, and the footwork of tap.
Students are exposed to music. They learn how to understand how notes work together to form melodies and songs. They learn songs that create a welcoming spirit that builds community. Students learn about different types of instruments and the sounds they create.
Art Appreciation and creation are taught using different mediums. Teaching artists from partnering museums (MOMA, The Harlem Studio Museum of Art,) and other partners ( Doing Art Together ) help students learn about art. Students learn different techniques and styles. They study artists such as Faith Ringgold, Romare Bearden, and Jacob Lawerence
